WCAG vs. Local Standards | Understanding Web Accessibility Standards Around the World
What we cover
Cynthia, an accessibility expert at Ciao, explains how the WCAG international standards serve as a common foundation worldwide. She discusses the differences between international and local standards, and how Ciao applies the lessons learned from one country to another to conduct accessibility validations around the world.
The WCAG are the universal foundation of accessibility
Local nuances are easy to pick up
Beyond the common framework provided by the WCAG, each region adds its own specific exceptions and requirements. It’s an additional layer that’s easy to master.
Lessons learned can be applied from one project to another
Because the basic criteria remain the same everywhere, the expertise gained on one project or in one country can be directly applied elsewhere.

Cynthia, how are you?
Cynthia
It is going well, you?
Karine
Yes, it is going well. Thank you. I am coming back from my trip to Europe where we spent time with our partners IT Link and I often had the question, how is it that at Ciao Technologie in Quebec, we can know the different accessibility regulations across the world?
Cynthia
To our knowledge, obviously we do not know all the countries and the rules across the world, but for those we know, the rules to apply from the various laws and standards on accessibility in the countries or the provinces all point toward the international standard of the W3C, that is to say the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) or rules for the accessibility of web contents in French.
It is sure that in addition, certain nuances, exceptions and additional requirements according to the countries or the provinces, but the heart is really the criteria to respect in matter of accessibility that point toward the WCAG.
Karine
And how does that, that impacts our capacity to do accessibility validations across the world?
Cynthia
Well I would say that as you know, we know well precisely all the criteria that are applied. We just need to inform ourselves on the small layer of exception of additional requirements which is done still fairly, I could say quickly.
Then after that, we are really capable of transposing our learnings that we do from one time to another, it is the same criteria that we put back from one time to another.
Karine
Perfect. And do we have a reference of the different accessibility standards across the world at Ciao Technologie?
Cynthia
Yes, we have a blog post precisely on the site of Ciao Technologie which is really very interesting on the subject.
Karine
Ah perfect, we are going to put the link in the notes of the video. So if we want to know what are the accessibility standards that apply at our place. We talk to us about our project. Completely perfect. Thank you Cynthia.
Cynthia
Ciao. Ciao bye.
