What is the digital divide?

The digital divide refers to the inequality in access to information technologies and communications in general. When it comes to digital access, we often talk about two levels of divide:

  • Litteral access: A person does not have access to an internet connection, a computer, or a mobile device.
  • Usage: Even when someone gains access to the digital world, they may be unable to participate. This could be due to cognitive difficulties, literacy challenges, or simply because they never learned how to use digital tools.

In a tech-driven company like Ciao, it can be hard to imagine that many people struggle to access the digital world—whether due to literacy difficulties or simply because they lack internet access.

But how is it possible to not have internet access today?

When we talk to organizations working to help the first level of digital divide, we realize that someone experiencing homelessness, for example, may not have internet access or a mobile subscription. This makes it incredibly difficult for them to access essential services, which are increasingly available online.

How does Ciao help?

At Ciao, we focus on the digital divide once a person has gained internet access. We support organizations by first evaluating the current state of their digital platforms, such as websites and applications. Then, we provide guidance on various ways to make these platforms more accessible to all populations.

When we talk about accessibility, we mean not only people with disabilities but also those who are less familiar with digital tools.

We help organizations make their content more understandable and easier to use, ensuring that navigation is intuitive and that people can successfully complete the tasks they need to accomplish.

Even better: by simplifying digital processes—such as booking a doctor’s appointment or completing an online banking transaction—we make life easier for everyone, not just beginners. And that’s something we love!
