Why is this important?
Just like physical accessibility (e.g., wheelchair ramps), digital accessibility ensures that everyone can navigate and interact with technology, regardless of their abilities.
This concerns in particular:
- People with disabilities (visual, auditory, motor, cognitive, etc.)
- Older adults who may struggle with technology
- People with reading or learning disabilities
- People in precarious situations who do not have access to recent equipment or a fast connection
Beyond limitations, digital accessibility is not just about inclusion: it improves the user experience for everyone and promotes a fair web environment.
The principles of digital accessibility
An accessible website or application must be:
- Perceivable→ Content should be visible and understandable to everyone (e.g. subtitles for videos, alt text for images).
- Operable→ Navigation should be simple and possible without a mouse (e.g. keyboard or voice navigation).
- Understandable → The information must be clear, with simple language and intuitive interfaces.
- Robust → The site must be compatible with different assistive devices and technologies (screen readers, voice control software, etc.).
